MUSIC:A UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE

So it was early morning…really èàrly morning, around fourish, when my memories wondered back, way back when….The 80’s,to be precise.I am part of Qora and a friend on this platform(J.M)always asks me real interesting questions, about music. He was at it again.A question about Dire Straits…

My first encounter with Dire Straits, was after their release of Sultans of Swing,in 1978.I didn’t know who they were, but they were popular,as their song was played quit often,on my eldest sisters(“transistor”/”wireless”)radio.

I was only five or six, when my sister bought her first Hi-fi(bìg speakers)and Vinyl records, with the money she earned, working as cashier,at a vèry wellknown Supermarket, after school, over the weekends and during school holidays. How will I ever forget het double LP(LongPlay)of Neil Diamond(already a music icon)called Hot August Night?I didn’t really, like àll the songs on this album, but I fell in love with music, because of this experience. She then bought two 7″singles:one side unknown to me and the other side,”Chirpe Chirpe Cheap Cheap” by a band with just as weird a name”Middle of the road”The other 7″single was also unknown,on the one side and then a song calied”Looky,Looky”on the other.Of course there were the Beatles and others….

When we hit the 80s,music was such a big part,of my miserable life, that I had my radio switched on,day and night. After a nearly five year marriage and three small children(5+4+just over a year)later,I’ve had it with the deadbeat father and got divorced(Will still share this part,on another occasion)I got a job and moved closer to my parents. At last my life could begin.I wasn’t stuck at home,on a small holding, kilometers out of town, with only my babies and dog,to keep me company.I made friends and enjoyed my job,as a nurse.I got invited to girl nights out,on my only weekend off,per month. My parents had no problem with watching the children,as they’ve been part of their lives, since birth. We’d go clubbing and dancing…I got most of my knowledge on music, during these years. It was because of;The Petshop-Boys, Modern Talking,Blue System,Erasure,Lips Inc’s,Funky Town,Madonna…. that I remembered old favorites.Beauitful songs, by wonderfull artists.Fleetwood Mac,Nazareth,Kris Kristofferson,Captain&Tennielle,Pink Floyd,Eric Clapton,Prince,Alphaville, OND,R.E.M,UB40,Midnight Oil……

It was as if,I couldn’t get to know, enough about music.I got to hear other artists, through friends…Don Williams,Andy Williams,Kenny Rogers,Glen Campbell,Barbara Streisand,Smokey,ACDC, Bob Marley,ABBA,Pussycat,Chuck Berry,Buck Owens,Lauretta Lynn…..I could even,go back in time again and remember the songs, played at the family parties,of around the time,I got to know Neil Diamond:…”Hobla-Di Hobla-Da”.. Love Letters In The Sand…Sunday,Monday, Tuesday,Wednessay.. Picking Up Pebbles(And Trowing Them Into The Sea)Please Release me…

Music entered my life lòng before Neil Diamond….Dire Straits, with the 80’s hits “Walk if Live” and “Money for Nothing” made sure,I never forget old favorites and taught me,to keep on learning more and more, about those from way back when, but to also give the Hits of today a chance;Maroon 5,Olly Murs,Miley Cirus,Jonas Blue,DNCE,…Even new hits by old favorites like http://is%20[/audioBlake,Keith,Reba…We live in a world, with so many languages, where in South Africa alòne,we have 11 official languages, amongst others.

It doesn’t matter!!You don’t need a degree and you don’t have to wait, until you are in the company of others, who speak in you’re mother tongue….As long as you’ve got the moves, the beat and the love for it:MUSIC IS A UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE
